I was adopted at the age of 5 weeks. I investigated by making a lot of phone calls and found my birth mother when I was 19. I later met my biological father. (Birth father doesn't seem appropriate since he wasn't there at my birth). I keep in touch with both.

I have epilepsy and as a child was treated for hyperactivity. Later it was diagnosed as ADHD and even later as BIPOLAR DISORDER. I have a biological aunt (my birth mother's sister) who is bipolar. I also have a child with autism. (Possibly another child of mine had a form of autism as well. We are unsure and she died last year so we never will know). An aunt of mine has a grandchild with autism. I also have a niece with an anxiety related neurotic disorder.

None of these things were indicated in my "family history" given to the adoption agency. Much of it was not yet present or known.

I am a strong advocate of open adoptions.
